Sometimes Pinkless is the Way to Go for Breast Cancer Awareness
I’ve discussed some of my issues with the whole pink ribbon breast cancer crusade before. I guess there are others who are kind of overwhelmed and tired of the whole pink scene, namely women with breast cancer. Can you imagine constant reminders of your illness bombarding you during every minute of your day? A great article I found showed how one women is Thinking Before Pinking in auction form.
So here is what I’m going to suggest. If you often donate money to Susan G. Koman or other similar organizations, cool. I wouldn’t stop you. However, there are a lot of us who would like to do something but don’t have the funds. I think there is still so much we can do. For example, there is a local organization that I once heard about that offers a sanctuary for those living with cancer. It is a place to just chill out and relax, talk with others or just enjoy a moment of solitude. I can bet they have a needs list of things that can be donated.
So, for the month of October, I am going to find organizations, like the one I mentioned, that help people living with cancer. I am going to start my own donation drive that will consist of money OR donated items. Unlike years past, I am not going to give a present with each donation. I just don’t want to feed that monster anymore. I will, however, have a list at the end of the month of people who have donated. (If they so choose)
There, that’s all. I just want to make a difference without causing some poor mom who is living with breast cancer to break down in the frozen food section while trying to find a pop tarts container without a pink ribbon on it.
‘Nuff said!
